A Quarter For My Thoughts: Impressions on the 3rd Quarter
1. Not Exactly Ground Beef - Remember how the ground game was supposed to carry this team? Not so much in this game. Now, something has to do with the fact that Rutgers’ inept passing game and play calling is allowing West Virginia to stack the line, but really, this team should be better than this. Just 64 yards on 23 carries is not what this team needs to be competitive against ranked teams.
2. Taking It To The House - On the play before Joe Lefeged returned a kickoff 91 yards for his first career touchdown, the ball blew off the tee for West Virginia kicker Tyler Bitancurt. The moment prompted a member of the West Virginia reporter to term it a “Charlie Brown” kick as Bitancurt ran to kick the ball and missed. There was nothing “Peanuts” about Lefeged’s return however.
3. Game Ov-Uh - With a 3rd quarter interception pick-six, West Virginia put this game away. Rutgers can try to play catch-up but with an anemic passing game and nothing going on the ground, the Mountaineers might as well put this one in the “W” column.
4. 52,534 - Announced attendance for the sold-out game. Right now, the place is maybe 2/3 full and the student section has emptied to maybe half capacity. Perhaps it just feels like a blow-out game since Rutgers has punted six times but at 14-3 at half-time, there shouldn’t be such despondency.
Extra Point: Lots of credit to the Mountaineers kicker Steve Kozlowski for an incredibly solid day. It was Kozlowski, who had six punts and is averaging nearly 46 yards per punt, who consistently changed field position in the quarter for West Virginia.
