A Quarter For My Thoughts: Impressions on the 2nd Quarter

1. Enough Already - This “Sanu package” idea has now gone the way of the “Jabu package” - it stops being effective if it is run too much and the same way. There must be some sort of, pardon my Lee Corso, “tricker-ration” involved other than running the Rutgers version of the wildcat offense between the tackles.

2. Offensive offense - The aforementioned “Sanu package,” coupled with the offensive play calling made for a frustrating 2nd quarter for Rutgers fans to watch. Failures passing on 1st down would lead to a predictable short running gain on 2nd down and a failed attempt on 3rd and long. There is no balance to the offense and even less to the play calling.

3. Savage Rattled - It is painfully obvious that the Rutgers freshman quarterback is rattled. Twice in the quarter he has been sacked for double-digit yard losses. Most of his passes have been off the mark. This second half, Savage needs to come out and perform. If not, this game gets ugly.

4. Defense Improves - After a quarter where West Virginia scored on two of their first three possessions, the Rutgers defense more than settled down. The Mountaineers rushing game had little traction; in the 1st quarter Noel Devine toted the ball for 39 yards on four carries and in the 2nd quarter, was held to -3 yards on two carries.

Extra Point: Rutgers has to be scoreboard watching right now. It is killer to see Pitt, a program Rutgers owned over the past several seasons, now up on Cincinnati and perhaps BCS bound. Pitt 31-10? Think Schiano is regretting not offering Dion Lewis now?
