A Quarter For My Thoughts: Four Impressions on the 2nd Quarter

1. The Defense of ’06 - This unit looks all over the place, three turnovers in the first half bodes well for an offense that still is inconsistent. Did you know that Rutgers has forced a turnover in 15 straight games? Now you know. While it has been mainly B.J. Daniels making errors, the defense still needs to make the plays. So far, they have.

2. D.C. is Capital - Have to like the moxie converted tight end D.C. Jefferson has shown in this game, after taking a hard hit from USF’s George Selvie, Jefferson has made two nice snares this half. Based off his play, the tight end position might be a bit more settled then once thought this summer.

3. Failure to Te It Up - Having San San Te line-up for a 2nd quarter field goal is not a good idea when the kick is from 51 yards out with a stiff breeze. The missed field goal gave USF great field position and their drive looked promising until Daniels inexplicably threw an interception. Although Rutgers is dominating the game on many levels, the score at the time of the field goal was 10-0. Schiano can’t be taking chances in a game like this.

4. Special Teams - It was an outstanding play by Devin McCourty in the first half to pounce on the muffed punt. Then McCourty blocked a late-half punt to set up a field goal by Rutgers to end the half. The offense has been inconsistent, but has been helped by some very special play on special teams.
