A Quarter For My Thoughts: Four Impressions on the 1st Quarter

1. Savage Looks Poised - The freshman quarterback appears poised in the opening 15 minutes, apparently carrying the confidence of two week’s ago and the comeback win over UConn. Savage’s opening drive had a little bit of everything, going 2-for-3 for 38 yards and a touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu. He even rumbled for 11 yards on a designed bootleg. All told, a very nice start for Savage.

2. The Crowd - Disappointing to say the least. Thursday night on ESPN means a national television audience. Factor in a ranked opponent and a winning record and this should have been a sell-out. Lots of empty seats and quiet fans out there. Very disappointing. 80% capacity, even if announced attendance is higher, is not acceptable.

3. Jonesin’ - If you hadn’t heard his name before, there is a reason, Brandon Jones hadn’t done too much this year for Rutgers. A red shirt freshman, Jones came up with an opportunistic interception that gave Rutgers gave good field position and an eventual 10-0 lead halfway through the quarter. This might just be the confident boost Jones need to stamp his place into a wide open secondary battle this year and next year.

4. Daniels In the Lion’s Den - So far, much hyped USF quarterback B.J. Daniels has appeared unsettled, his happy feet in the pocket leading him to be unsettled in the pocket. The Bulls haven’t done a poor job of protecting their quarterback, but good coverage downfield and the fact thatDaniels hasn’t gotten settled in his pocket is impacting USF’s ability to move the ball.
